Vadodara: Ornate Chhatris built by the noble families of the erstwhile state of Baroda is fast effacing from the cityscape.
According to city-based art conservator, while there were about 350 such structures on Vishwamitri banks behind Kamati Baug in 2001, at present the numbers have decreased to about 100.
Apart from the priceless art engravings, there is unfortunately no recorded history of these structures.

These chhatris were built on the banks of Vishwamitri River for the convenience of people, who could take a dip in the river, after cremation rituals.
"Most of the structures are older than 300 years. The artwork on these structures reflect the social status of the families that built them in memory of their loved ones. Materials ranging from limestone to marble were used to construct them," said art conservator Chandrashekhar Patil.
According to Patil, the bank of Vishwamitri River across the city had about 2,500 such chhatris a century ago. He attributes the gradual decline in numbers to encroachments. Patil believes that these structures are historical evidence that can help citizens understand several facets of the bygone era.
At present, Chhatris near Kamnath Mahadev temple behind Kamati Baug lie overshadowed amidst the clamour of the city and a polluted pond. The people who frequent the spot are unaware of its history.

"The chhatris were ornate and had intricate art works, but time and layers of lime stone coatings have faded their glory. They are now flanked with houses and small shops. The structures are used by residents to tie their livestock," said Patil.
"It is very difficult and impractical to preserve every old structure in a city. Having a dedicated committee with people well versed in history and architecture can help in at least identifying significant structures. Heritage sites should be categorized and preserved according to their historical significance," said former dean of Faculty of Fine Arts of MS University, Deepak Kannal.
